Iron is the marker where "more" is most clearly not better — both too little and too much matter — and it's the one most often read as a panel rather than a single number. Why both directions matter
- Low iron / ferritin points to depleted stores — the more familiar concern, and one that can develop from diet, blood loss, or increased needs.
- High ferritin / saturation can reflect iron overload, and because iron is not readily excreted, that's a real consideration. It's the main reason iron is never something to supplement casually: it's guided by lab values and a clinician, and typically reassessed once levels return to normal.
There's one important nuance: ferritin also rises with inflammation. So a high ferritin isn't automatically "too much iron" — it can reflect an inflammatory state, which is why the hs-CRP marker and the rest of the panel provide context.
Reading your result
Reference ranges vary by lab and differ by sex, and ferritin in particular is often interpreted differently depending on the clinical picture. Dietary iron comes in two forms: heme iron from animal foods (red meat, poultry, fish), which is more readily absorbed, and non-heme iron from plants (legumes, tofu, spinach, fortified grains), which is absorbed less efficiently but helped by vitamin C at the same meal.
