  • The unit — the scale (ng/mL, pg/mL, µg/L). Units matter: the same nutrient can be reported on different scales by different labs, so a number is meaningless without its unit.
  • The reference range — the interval that covers most of the tested population.

Reference ranges: useful, but not a verdict

Two things about reference ranges are worth understanding, because they're where most misreadings happen:

  1. Ranges differ between labs. Each lab sets its own reference interval based on its methods and its tested population. The same value can be flagged at one lab and unflagged at another. Always read a result against the range printed on that report — not a number you remember from somewhere else.

  2. "In range" is a location, not a grade. The range shows where most people fall; it doesn't mean any spot inside it is equally good for you. Being one point above the lower bound and sitting comfortably mid-range are both "normal," but they can be quite different situations — especially with symptoms, a restricted diet, or medications that affect absorption.
